Bhumi Devi – The Primeval Mother Earth

Earth is indeed the mother of all living beings. On her long-enduring foundation has stood and sustained every form of life, including that of mountains, streams, land and humans.Earth is nobly named as ‘Bhūmī’ or Bhūdevī’, along with descriptive names of Dharā or Dharti, Dharaṇi, and Vasundharā in Sanskrit. As she holds the whole existence, she is named ‘dharā or dharaṇi ’ — the foundation that supports all life, and as she is the primary substance or element of creation1 , she is ‘bhūdevī, the earth goddess’; as she holds all richness and wealth of bio and ecological treasures in her womb, she is Vasundharā. 1 Pañca-mahābhuta are the 5 elements of creation - earth (dharati), water (jala), fire (tejas), wind (vāyu) and space (ākāśa). She is held by dharma, penance and wisdom, sings the vedic hymn of Atharva veda - भूमिं पृथिवीं धर्मणा धृताम् । शिवां स्योनामनु चरेम विश्वहा ॥१७॥ bhūmiṃ pṛthivīṃ dharmaṇā dhṛtām । śivāṃ syonāmanu carema viśvahā ॥17॥ “Bhūmi, the immovable earth; which is held by dharma, the abiding cosmic-order, sacrifice and in her auspiciousness gently pervades throughout the world.” - Bhūmi Sukta, 17 The Goddess of Earth Earth occupies the space of the ‘first-born of all beings’ personified as our goddess mother. The Vedic deliberation on Earth or Bhūmi devī is scintillating for it affirms Āryans as the children of earth2 ; thus lending true that the Vedas have expressions of reverence for nature, femininity, & motherhood and the vedic seers are foremost earth-worshipping environmentalists or ecologists. From Rāmāyaṇa, we learn that the ancient Kings who ruled over the earth, were addressed as ‘Mahīpati’, wedded to earth goddess, who lawfully guarded Her and her resources. 2 माता भूमि: पुत्रोऽहं पृथिव्याः । - mātā bhūmiḥ putro ahaṃ pṛthivyāḥ । - (Atharva-veda 12.1.12) - my mother is earth land, and I am the son of earth. Ages before, when saving the planet or going organic was not a modern need, the vedic societies delighted on Earth to the extent of ritualistically adoring Her as a Mother and not as an object to be vandalised. They beheld her as a soul’s abode and not as a sojourn to be exploited or ransacked. Thus, to harm the Earth was opined a diabolical vice. मा काकम्बीरमुद्वृहो वनस्पतिमशस्तीर्वि हि नीनशः । mā kākambīramudvṛho vanaspatimaśastīrvi hi nīnaśaḥ । "Do not uproot the trees because they remove pollution." - Ṛg Veda, 6.48.17 The Ṛg Veda not only eulogises Bhūmi as a primordial element or matter, but also reveres her as a life-giving mother earth who is habitat of all beings. द्यौर्मे पिता जनिता नाभिरत्र बन्धुर्मे माता पृथिवी महीयम् | dyaurme pitā janitā nābhiratra bandhurme mātā pṛthivī mahīyam | “The ethereal sky is my father and progenitor; the navel (of the earth) is my supporting kinsman; the spacious earth is my mother.” - Ṛgveda 1.164.33 Living in perfect harmony with Earth and enriching Her vast bio-diversities, was the vedic way of abundance; Wealth, in the days of yore, was defined by the fertility of soil, lush green-fields with sprouting floras and bounty of crops and rains - all through natural means3 ! 3 yasyāmidaṃ jinvati prāṇadejatsā no bhūmiḥ - mother earth manifests when ploughed, in Her is alive all lives (Bhumi Sukta, verse 3) The cosmic cycle of gratefully receiving from Earth and replenishing her with care and honour, was the conscious way of attracting wealth - be it health, peace, progeny and wellness. No kingdom could be rich bereft of Earth’s gifts, no artificial (polluting) agents could replace the sustainability of Bhūmi devī’s mineral-rich soils and greens. To illustrate, the illumined king-sage Janaka, to whom was given Bhūmidevī’s child from the womb of earth, named Sītā- is averment to the earth-worshipping culture. Janaka, though a King, toiled the lands, ploughed soils, harvested crops and kept his lands, environment and ecosystem abounding with solely organic and earthly wealth. For such a righteous king and land, the Earth gave in abundance. The Conception & Qualities of Earth Bhudevī is accepted as the incarnation of goddess Lakṣmī, the consort of Sri Mahāviṣṇu. In yore, Viṣṇu in his Varāha (boar) avatār protected the earth goddess, who was shrouded and floated bereft of abode in the limitless universal waters, being abducted by a demon named Hirañyākṣa; Varāha deva established her as earth, a life-abode of supreme gladness. Thus, she is ever adored as goddess Varāhi, the wife of Viṣṇu - त्वं देव्यादिवराहेण रसाया: स्थानमिच्छता । उद्धृतासि नमस्तुभ्यं पाप्मानं मे प्रणाशय ॥ २७ ॥ tvaṁ devy ādi-varāheṇa rasāyāḥ sthānam icchatā । uddhṛtāsi namas tubhyaṁ pāpmānaṁ me praṇāśaya ॥ “O goddess earth, you were raised by the Supreme in the form of original boar (ādi-varāha) because of your desire to have an abode to stay. I pray that may you vanquish all my sins. I offer my obeisances to you.” - Śrī Bhāgavata Purāṇa, 8.16.27 Forbearance, patience, stability and forgiveness rooted in motherly affection are Her core attributes, for She bears the burden of all life, yet gives unasked. Purāṇic history confirms that whenever Bhūmi devī felt the unbearable burden of viceful beings with evil hearts, exploiting her treasures and weighing down her earthly bosom, she took the form of a cow4 and wailed prayers to her dear Lord Viṣṇu for safekeeping. Viṣṇu has incarnated in many forms on Earth to save her and her children, and lend her more sacred by striding on her body, marking her with his lotus-feet - विष्णुर्यस्यां विचक्रमे - viṣṇuryasyāṃ vicakrame (bhūmi Sūktaṃ 10). 4 Earth is often depicted embodied as a mother cow, endowed with similar innate motherly qualities. यद्वाम्ब ते भूरि-भरावतार कृतावतारस्य हरेर् धरित्रि । yadvāmba te bhūri-bharāvatāra kṛtāvatārasya harer dharitri । “(Said Dharma personified: ) O mother earth, the supreme lord, Hari, incarnated himself (lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa) just to unload your heavy burden.” - Śrī Bhāgavata Purāṇa, 1.16.23 Another account from Devī Bhāgavata (navama skanda), declares the origins of Earth as — Mahāviṣṇu lay on the surface of universal waters, which spread everywhere. A lotus sprang up from the navel of Viṣṇu and from its top Brahmā was self-born. To manifest the creation, liquid matter began to stream out of Viṣṇu’s ears. From it were born two demons named Madhu-Kaiṭabha, who persecuted Brahmā to lord over him. Mahāviṣṇu woke up and killed Madhu-Kaiṭabha. The thick fat of these rākṣasas solidified into the earth, purified and accepted by Viṣṇu. Mahāviṣṇu himself first revered Her by reciting the mantra — "aum hrīṃ śrīṃ krīṃ vasudhāyai svāhā". After bespeaking this mantra, it became illustrious for invoking the grace of Bhūmidevī. Earth also turns into the goddess of wisdom, who spoke about the importance of family-life (gṛhastha āśrama dharma) to Śrī Kṛṣṇa. The goddess Earth said, “O Mādhava, the Ṛṣis, deities, ancestors, and men should be worshipped, and sacrifices should be performed, by a householder. The deities are ever pleased with sacrifices, and men are gratified with hospitality. Therefore, the householder should gratify them with objects as they desire.” (Mahābhārata, Anuśāsana Parva, 97.5) Bhudevī, the earth personified, is depicted as seated on a sacred platform with four elephants, representing the four directions of the world; having four arms, holding a pomegranate (bestowing the fruit of life), a water vessel (the satisfaction of life), a golden bowl containing healing herbs (granting wellness), and another bowl containing vegetables (granting nourishment through greens). Bhūmi Sūktaṃ 5 of Atharva Veda offers prayers to Bhūmi devī, proving the advanced ecological genius of seers and their insights into Earth and her secrets - 5 A hymn of 63 mantras in Atharva Veda, 12th section, composed by Ṛṣi Atharva. विश्वंभरा वसुधानी प्रतिष्ठा हिरण्यवक्षा जगतो निवेशनी । वैश्वानरं बिभ्रती भूमिरग्निमिन्द्रऋषभा द्रविणे नो दधातु ॥६॥ viśvaṃbharā vasudhānī pratiṣṭhā hiraṇyavakṣā jagato niveśanī । vaiśvānaraṃ bibhratī bhūmir-agnim-indraṛṣabhā draviṇe no dadhātu ॥6॥ “Salutations to Bhūmi (mother earth), she bears the whole world (viśvaṃbharā6 ), she is producer of all wealth (vasudhā), she is the foundation on which we live (pratiṣṭhā), she is of golden-bosom (hiraṇyavakṣā) and the dwelling place of the world; she holds the universal fire in her7 , the Fire that empowers Indra and ṛṣabha8 ; may Bhūmi bestow on us (the splendour of fire and make us strong).” 6 She is the sole planet directly available to us, representing the universe and to realise the underlying reality of Self. 7 It means She is described as the geothermal field. She is also described as holding Indra i.e., the geomagnetic field. 8 Indra is the ruler of heavenly realm, Ṛṣabha here can be a divine being or one of the seven sages (saptarṣis). गिरयस्ते पर्वता हिमवन्तोऽरण्यं ते पृथिवि स्योनमस्तु । बभ्रुं कृष्णां रोहिणीं विश्वरूपां ध्रुवां भूमिं पृथिवीमिन्द्रगुप्ताम् । अजीतेऽहतो अक्षतोऽध्यष्ठां पृथिवीमहम् ॥११॥ girayaste parvatā himavanto'raṇyaṃ te pṛthivi syonamastu । babhruṃ kṛṣṇāṃ rohiṇīṃ viśvarūpāṃ dhruvāṃ bhūmiṃ pṛthivīmindraguptām । ajīte'hato akṣato'dhyaṣṭhāṃ pṛthivīmaham ॥11॥ “O Bhūmi (mother earth), your hills, your snow-clad mountain peaks, your forests, may they show us kindliness and delight! You present a cosmic-form with your multifarious hues of brown (of mountains), blue (of rivers), red (of flowers), yet you are firm and immovable, guarded by Indra; invincible, unconquered, and unharmed you are, on you I stand establishing my abode.” Harming Earth is hurting our own self and ending the becoming! The noble way to save the afflicted mother, being exploited off her treasures and dumped with dross - is by lovingly serving her as a mother, Bhudevī, learning and adopting the ways of the vedic ones - who took humans, animals, vegetations, nature, water bodies, land and soil as the earth off-springs, who deserves our care. Earth is not a resource to be managed or saved, but a conscious divine being to be held with service, penance and sacrifices of noble ones. The enchanting vedic hymns convey the prayers to the earth goddess - यस्याश्चतस्रः प्रदिशः पृथिव्या यस्यामन्नं कृष्टयः संबभूवुः । या बिभर्ति बहुधा प्राणदेजत्सा नो भूमिर्गोष्वप्यन्ने दधातु ॥४॥ yasyāścatasraḥ pradiśaḥ pṛthivyā yasyāmannaṃ kṛṣṭayaḥ saṃbabhūvuḥ । yā bibharti bahudhā prāṇadejatsā no bhūmirgoṣvapyanne dadhātu ॥ 4॥ “To Earth belong the four directions of space; on Her grows food; on Her the ploughman toils. She carries likewise all that breathes and stirs. Earth, may She grant us cattle and food in plenty.” उपस्थास्ते अनमीवा अयक्ष्मा अस्मभ्यं सन्तु पृथिवि प्रसूता: । दीर्घं न आयु: प्रतिबुध्यमाना वयं तुभ्यं बलिहृत: स्याम ॥ ६२ ॥ upasthāste anamīvā ayakṣmā asmabhyaṃ santu pṛthivi prasūtā: । dīrghaṃ na āyu: pratibudhyamānā vayaṃ tubhyaṃ balihṛtaḥ syāma ॥ 62 ॥ “May your dwellings, O Earth, be free from sickness and pollution, and flourish for us! जो धर्म द्वारा धारण की जाती है, स्थायी ब्रह्मांडीय-व्यवस्था, यज्ञ एवं उसकी शुभता (शिवम्) में सौम्यता-पूर्वक पूर्ण विश्व में व्याप्त है।” - भूमि सूक्त, १७ धरती, भूमि स्वरूपिणी देवी धरती हमारी देवी माँता स्वरूपिणी है जो 'सभी प्राणियों में प्रथम जन्मी' के स्थान पर सुप्रसिद्ध है। भूमि देवी पर वैदिक प्रामाण तेजस्वि है क्योंकि यह आर्यों को धरती की संतान के रूप में पुष्टि करते है3 ; इस प्रकार यह सिद्ध होता है कि वेद - प्रकृति, स्त्रीत्व एवं मातृत्व के प्रति श्रद्धा की अभिव्यक्ति हैं तथा वैदिक ऋषि सबसे प्रमुख पृथ्वी-पूजक पर्यावरणविद् या पारिस्थितिकीविद् हैं। रामायण से, हम सीखते हैं कि प्राचीन राजाओं जिन्होनें पूर्ण धरती पर शासन किया था, वें 'महिपति' नाम-उपाधि से संबोधित थे, जो भूमि देवी से धर्मपूर्ण विवाहित थे, महिपतियों ने उनकी एवं उनके संसाधनों की विधिपूर्वक रक्षा की थी। 3 माता भूमि: पुत्रोऽहं पृथिव्याः । - (अथर्ववेद १२.१.१२) - मेरी माता भूमि है एवं मैं पृथ्वी का पुत्र हूँ। प्राचीन युगों पूर्व, जब ग्रह का रक्षण या जैविक जीवनशैली मात्र आधुनिक आवश्यकताएं नहीं थी, तब वैदिक समाज धरती से प्रसन्न थे, अनुष्ठानिक रूप से उन्हें एक माँता के रूप में पूजा-सेवा करते थे, न की किसी उपद्रव मचाना की वस्तु के रूप में, उन्हें एक आत्मा के निवास के रूप में देखा गया, न कि शोषण या तोड़फोड़ के लिए एक प्रवास के रूप में। अतैव, पृथ्वी को हानी पहुँचाना एक शैतानी दोष समझा गया। मा काकम्बीरमुद्वृहो वनस्पतिमशस्तीर्वि हि नीनशः । "वनस्पति को कदापि मत निर्मूल करें क्योंकि वे प्रदूषण का नाश करते हैं।" - ऋग्वेद, ६.४८.१७ ऋग्वेद, भूमि को केवल मूल तत्व या पदार्थ के रूप में स्तुति नहीं करता, अपितु उन्हें जीवन प्रदान करनेवाली धरती माता के स्वरूप में यशोगान करता है जो सभी प्राणियों का निवास स्थान है। द्यौर्मे पिता जनिता नाभिरत्र बन्धुर्मे माता पृथिवी महीयम् | “व्योम् आकाश मेरे पिता एवं पूर्वज है; (पृथ्वी की) नाभि मेरे सहायक बन्धु है; विशाल पृथ्वी मेरी माता है।” - ऋग्वेद, १.१६४.३३ भूमि-देवी के अंक में पूर्ण सामंजस्य में रहना एवं उनकी विशाल जैव-विविधताओं को समृद्ध करना, समृद्धी की वैदिक प्रणाली थी; जब धन-ऐश्वर्य को मिट्टी की उर्वरता, हरे-भरे खेतों में उगते वनस्पति-फूलों एवं फसलों तथा वर्षा की प्रचुरता से परिभाषित किया जाता था - सभी केवल प्राकृतिक साधनों के माध्यम से4 ! 4 यस्यामिदं जिन्वति प्राणदेजत्सा नो भूमिः - हल जोताई से धरती माता प्रकट होती है, उनमें सभी जिन्वत हैं (भूमि सूक्त, ३) भूमिदेवी से कृतज्ञता पूर्वक प्राप्त करने एवं उनकी सेवा तथा सम्मान पूर्वक पोषित करने का यह ब्रह्मांडीय चक्र, धन-धान्य को आकर्षित करने का सचेत माध्यम् था - चाहे वह स्वास्थ्य, शांति, संतान एवं संपन्नता रूपी धन हो। कोई भी राज्य भूमि के उपहारों के विना समृद्ध नहीं हो सकता था, कोई भी अप्राकृतिक (प्रदूषणकारी) कारक भूमि-देवी की खनिज युक्त मिट्टी एवं वनस्पति की संवहनीयता का स्थान नहीं ले सकता है। उधारणतः आत्मज्ञानी राज-ऋषि जनक, जिन्हें पृथ्वी के गर्भ से सीता5 नामक भूमिदेवी की पुत्री प्राप्त हुई थी - भूमि-पूजा सेवा की संस्कृति हेतु समर्पित थे। जनक, यद्यपि एक राजा थे, उन्होंने धरती पर खेती की, मिट्टी की जुताई की, फसल की कटाई एवं अपनी भूमि, पर्यावरण एवं पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र को पूर्णतय जैविक धन से परीपूर्ण रखा। ऐसी धर्मीक राजा तथा भूमि को, धरती ने सर्व संपन्नता प्रदान की। 5 सीता देवी लक्ष्मी हैं, जो भगवान राम की पत्नी हैं। भूदेवी का सृजन एवं गुण भूदेवी को श्री महाविष्णु की पत्नी, देवी लक्ष्मी के अवतार के रूप में स्वीकार किया जाता है। प्राचीन काल में, विष्णु ने अपने वराह अवतार में भूदेवी की रक्षा की थी, जो असीमित ब्रह्माण्ड जल में तैरती हुई निवास से वंचित थी, जिनका हिरण्याक्ष नामक एक असुर ने अपहरण किया था; वराह देव ने भूदेवी को पृथ्वी के रूप में स्थापित किया, जो आनन्द का जीवन-धाम बनी। इस प्रकार, उन्हें सदैव विष्णु की पत्नी वाराही देवी के रूप में पूजा जाता है - त्वं देव्यादिवराहेण रसाया: स्थानमिच्छता । उद्धृतासि नमस्तुभ्यं पाप्मानं मे प्रणाशय ॥ २७ ॥ "हे देवी पृथ्वी, आप निवास हेतु एक स्थान की इच्छा के कारण आदि-वराह के रूप में ईश्वर द्वारा उत्थापित की गयीं थी। मैं प्रार्थना करता हूँ कि आप मेरे सभी पापों को नाश करें। मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ।" - श्री भागवत पुराण, ८.१६.२७ ममता में निहित सहनशीलता, धैर्य, स्थिरता, ज्ञान एवं क्षमा उनके मूल गुण हैं, क्योंकि वें सभी जीवन का भार वहन करती है, फिर भी बिना यचना कर देतीं है। पुराणिक इतिहास इस कथा की पुष्टि करता है कि जब भी भूमिदेवी दुष्ट आत्माओं व दुष्ट प्राणियों के असहनीय भार से संतापित हुई, जिनने भू निधियों का शोषण किया एवं उनकी सांसारिक धरा को त्रास किया, तो उन्होंने एक गौ माता का रूप6 धारण किया तथा अपने प्रिय प्रभू विष्णु से रक्षा की विनय-प्रार्थना की। विष्णु ने उन्हें एवं उनकी संतानों के रक्षण हेतु भूतल पर कई रूपों में अवतार लिया है, तथा भूमि की देह पर स्वीय दिव्य पदकमल चिन्हो से सुशोभित करते हुए उन्हें एवं अधिक पवित्र बनाया है - विष्णुर्यस्यां विचक्रमे (भूमि सूक्त १०)। 6 पृथ्वी को अक्सर एक धेनु माँ के रूप में चित्रित किया जाता है, जो गौ समान मातृ गुणों से संपन्न होती है। यद्वाम्ब ते भूरि-भरावतार कृतावतारस्य हरेर् धरित्रि । "(धर्म ने कहा:) हे धरती माता, परम् भगवान, हरि (श्री कृष्ण) ने स्वयं अवतार लिया, केवल आपके अति भू-भार को उतारने के लिए।" - श्री भागवत पुराण, १.१६.२३ देवी भागवत (नवम स्कंद) का एक अन्य वृत्तांत, भूदेवी की उत्पत्ति को यथा व्यक्त करता है — महाविष्णु ब्रह्माण्डीय जल की सतह पर विराजमान थे, जो सर्वत्र व्याप्त था। विष्णु की नाभि से एक कमल निकला एवं उसमें से ब्रह्मा देव स्वयं उत्पन्न हुए। सृष्टि को प्रकट करने के लिए, विष्णु के कर्णों से तरल पदार्थ निकलने लगा। इससे मधु-कैटभ नामक दो राक्षस उत्पन्न हुए, जिन्होंने प्रभुता स्थापित करने ब्रह्मा को यातनाएँ प्रदान की। महाविष्णु ने योगनिद्रा से जाग्रत होकर मधु-कैटभ राक्षसों का वध किया। इन राक्षसों की मोटी चर्बी पृथ्वी में जम गई, जिन्हें विष्णु द्वारा शुद्ध एवं स्वीकार किया गया। महाविष्णु ने स्वयं प्रथम मंत्र - "ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं क्रीं वसुधायै स्वाहा" का उच्चारण करके उनकी स्तुति की। इस मंत्र के उच्चारण के बाद, यह भूमिदेवी कृपा का आह्वान करने हेतु प्रसिद्ध हो गया। भूदेवी विद्या की देवी का भी स्वरूप है, जिन्होंने श्रीकृष्ण को पारिवारिक जीवन (गृहस्थ आश्रमधर्म) के महत्व के विषय में बताया। भूदेवी ने संबोधित किया, "हे माधव, ऋषि, देवताओं, पूर्वजों एवं पुरुषों की अर्चना की जानी चाहिए, तथा एक गृहस्थ को यज्ञ करना चाहिए। यज्ञ से देवता प्रसन्न होते हैं एवं सत्कार से मनुष्य तृप्त होते हैं। इसलिए गृहस्थ को चाहिए कि वे अपनी इच्छानुसार वस्तुओं से उन्हें तृप्त करें।" (महाभारत, अनुषासन पर्व, ९७.५) भूदेवी, पृथ्वी स्वरूपिणी, चार हाथियों के साथ एक पवित्र आसन पर स्थित हुए चित्रित की जाती है, जो विश्व की चार दिशाओं का प्रतीक हैं; चार भुजाओं वाली, एक अनार (जीवन का फल देने वाली), एक जल पात्र (जीवन की संतुष्टि), एक स्वर्ण कलश जिसमें औषधियाँ (स्वास्थ्य प्रदान करना) तथा एक अन्य पात्र जिसमें वनस्पति हैं (अन्न द्वारा पोषण देना)। अथर्ववेद का भूमि सूक्त, भूमिदेवी की सुन्दर स्तुति करता है, जो ऋषियों की उन्नत पारिस्थितिक प्रतिभा, पारलौकिक ज्ञान एवं पृथ्वी के रहस्यों में उनकी अंतर्दृष्टि को प्रमाणित करता है - विश्वंभरा वसुधानी प्रतिष्ठा हिरण्यवक्षा जगतो निवेशनी । वैश्वानरं बिभ्रती भूमिरग्निमिन्द्रऋषभा द्रविणे नो दधातु ॥६॥ "भूमि को नमस्कार, जो पूर्ण विश्व धारण करती है (विश्वंभरा), वें सभी धन की उत्पादक है (वसुधा), वें वह नींव है जिस पर हम स्थित हैं (प्रतिष्ठा), वें स्वर्ण-ह्रदय की है (हिरण्यवक्ष) तथा जगत का निवास स्थान हैं; वें अपने अन्क में विश्व अग्नि धारण करती है7 , वह अग्नि जो इंद्र8 एवं ऋषभ को शक्ति प्रदान करती है; भूमि हमें (अग्नि का तेज व बल) प्रदान करें । ” 7 इसका अर्थ है कि उन्हें भू-तापीय क्षेत्र के रूप में वर्णित किया है। उन्हें इंद्र यानी भूचुंबकीय क्षेत्र धारण करने के रूप में भी वर्णित किया गया है। 8 इंद्र स्वर्ग लोक के शासक हैं, यहां ऋषभ एक दिव्य जीव या सप्तर्षियों में से एक हो सकते है। गिरयस्ते पर्वता हिमवन्तोऽरण्यं ते पृथिवि स्योनमस्तु । बभ्रुं कृष्णां रोहिणीं विश्वरूपां ध्रुवां भूमिं पृथिवीमिन्द्रगुप्ताम् । अजीतेऽहतो अक्षतोऽध्यष्ठां पृथिवीमहम् ॥११॥ "हे भूमि, आपके पर्वत, हिम से ढके पर्वत शिखर, आपके वन, हमें दया एवं प्रसन्नता प्रदान करें! भूरे (पर्वतों), नीले (नदियों के), लाल (फूलों) के अपने विविध रंगों सहित आपका एक विश्वरूप प्रस्तुत करते हैं, तथापि आप इंद्र द्वारा संरक्षित, दृढ़ एवं अचल हैं; आप अजेय, अक्षय एवं अहानिकर हैं, आप पर मैं अपना निवास स्थापित करता हूं।” पृथ्वी को हानि पहुँचाना स्वयं पर हिंसा करना है एवं भविष्य का अंत करना है! वह पीड़ित माँ, जिनकी निधियों का शोषण तथा मैल से दूशित किया जा रहा है, उनकी प्रसन्नता का सर्वोत्तम् मार्ग है, उन्हें भूदेवी माँ के रूप में स्नेहपूर्ण पूजा-सेवा करना, वैदिक जनों की प्राणाली को सीखना एवं अपनाना - जिन्होंने मनुष्यों, पशुओं, वनस्पतियों, जल, मिट्टी, प्रकृति को स्वीकार किया, वें हमारी सेवा-भाव के योग्य हैं। पृथ्वी एक संसाधन नहीं जिसे प्रबंधित या रक्षा की जानी चाहिए, अपितु एक सचेत दिव्यता है जिन्हें धर्म परायण जन ही स्वीय तपस्या, आदेश, प्रयास से सेवा कर सकते है। मंत्रमुग्ध करते वैदिक मन्त्र पृथ्वी देवी की प्रार्थना करते हैं - यस्याश्चतस्रः प्रदिशः पृथिव्या यस्यामन्नं कृष्टयः संबभूवुः । या बिभर्ति बहुधा प्राणदेजत्सा नो भूमिर्गोष्वप्यन्ने दधातु ॥४॥ "पृथ्वी की आकाशिक चार दिशाएं हैं; उन पर अन्न उगाता है; उन पर हलधारी श्रम करता है। वें उसी तरह सब करती है जो प्राणश्वास एवं स्पंदन धारण करती है। वें पृथ्वी हमें बहुधा पशु एवं अन्न प्रदान करें।" उपस्थास्ते अनमीवा अयक्ष्मा अस्मभ्यं सन्तु पृथिवि प्रसूता: । दीर्घं न आयु: प्रतिबुध्यमाना वयं तुभ्यं बलिहृत: स्याम ॥ ६२ ॥ "हे पृथ्वी, आपका निवास, विकारों एवं व्यर्थ व्यय से मुक्त हो, एवं आप हमारे लिए समृद्ध रहे! दीर्घ आयु प्रबुद्ध जीवन के द्वारा, हम सभी आपको सदैव श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करें!” विश्व स्तर पर पृथ्वी दिवस का यह अवसर, मनुष्यों को पृथ्वी रक्षण हेतु लड़ने का आह्वान करता है, यह तिथि है हमारे घर, हमारी धरती मां - भूमिदेवी को सुरक्षित एवं संरक्षित करने हेतु अदम्य साहस की;
