Dīpāvalī – The Festival Of Supreme Light

The timeless vedic culture is a tradition of constant reaffirmations of truth, while its cultural practices are methods to reinstate those truths in joyous acts. One such cultural splendour is the festival of Dīpāvalī. It reminds humanity about its innate pure self, whose nature is goodness, faith and connection with the Supreme light. Dīpāvalī is an assurance in practice of brilliant possibilities that light of wisdom and intelligence can present us with and the possibility to dispel unending darkness.

Dīpāvalī, also known as Dīpadānam, the offering of light, is the most celebrated festival of lights, observed by billions of people across faith. Literally meaning “array of light” (dīpānām āvalī), this five-day festival enlivens with prayers, traditional feasts, and light works, and some lineages celebrate it as a new year. On the amāvāsya tithi (new moon day), the main festival is celebrated as Lakṣmī Pūjā. In many parts of East India, goddess Kālī is worshipped as an embodiment of the pure power of the Supreme to ward off negativity and all kinds of impurities. In South India, the main day is celebrated on Naraka Caturdaśī (the fourteenth day of the waning moon between mid-October and mid-November).

While it is widely known that Dīpāvalī symbolises the conquest of victory over the darkness of ignorance, the less-known revelations from the great epics about Dīpāvalī can strengthen our trust and hope in its ancient festivities and rituals. The esoteric significance of Dīpāvalī is ” the clear light of pure awareness.”

Dīpāvalī marks the golden time when Lord Śrī Rāma, the human incarnation of Viṣṇu, returned supremely victorious to his homeland Ayodhyā after vanquishing the evil embodied Rāvaṇa and disinfecting earth from the demonic forces. Thus, by his sublime acts, he revived goodness in humanity, lasting peace in hearts and a dhārmic, piety-abiding, glorious civilisation. As per the Rāmāyaṇa, the auspicious day of Śrī Rāma’s homecoming, along with his consort Sītā and valiant ape army, marked the new-moon dark fortnight, which came to be known as Dīpāvalī. In joy unfathomable, the denizens of Ayodhyā city lit up the whole city with countless rows of diyas (traditional earthen lamps). As Śrī Rāma’s arrival approached, from the skyway, seated in the magnificent aerial chariot (Puṣpaka Vimāna), the city shone ablaze below in a rapturous celebration of lights, fragrant flowers and flags. The diyas verily symbolised the luminous hearts of the citizens, shining after fourteen years of dark separation from their most endearing, merciful Prince to rule. When cognised within, this refulgent phenomenon symbolises the awakening of the soul (jīvātmā) as a citizen in the body of Ayodhyā by the rule of and reunion with the supreme being (paramātmā) in Śrī Rāma.

The glories of the Dīpāvalī festival are laden in many a vast vedic scripture for significantly purifying, protecting and enlightening our lives at all levels. The prayer for Dīpāvalī in the divine epics sings:

upaśamita meghanādaṁ prajvalita daśānanaṁ ramitarāmam ।
rāmāyaṇamiva subhagāṁ dīpadānam haratu vo duritam ।।

“During the Dīpāvalī, the roars of the clouds will become quiet, just the way Indrajit1 (Meghanād) became quiet in the Rāmāyaṇa. Just as the ten-headed Rāvaṇa was burnt, the face of (oil lamp) wicks will burn. Let the festival of Dīpāvalī, which is as auspiciously scenic as the Rāmāyaṇa, destroy all our sins.”

– [Bhaviṣyatottara Purāṇam, 140-71]

1 Indrajit or Meghanād, is the valiant son of evil Rāvaṇa, who had conquered the king of devas, whose roar was akin to thunder sound.

Observances of Dīpāvalī differ depending on region and traditions. The most widespread custom is the lighting of diyas (earthenware lamps filled with oil) on the night of the new moon to invite the presence of Lakṣmī and Viṣṇu, the goddess of wealth with the Supreme.

The festival also marks Lord Kṛṣṇa’s victory over the hellish demon Narakāsura, bringing peace to the earthlings. Narakāsura repented in his last moments and prayed to mother Earth that his death be celebrated with lights and colours across the lands every year, a wish that was gladly granted. Narakāsura2 was drunk with power, as he knew himself to be unrivalled in prowess; he brought all the kingdoms on earth under his control. Narakāsura’s downfall is the personification of ego, and the act of killing him with the divine discus (Sudarśana cakra) by Lord Kṛṣṇa signifies the destruction of indulgence and pride and ego on the Naraka Caturdaśī day. This, too, forms the core of Dīpāvalī principle.

2 As per Mahābhārata, the invincible Narakāsura demon ruled over Prāgjyotiṣa kingdom, who had abducted 16,000 young women and tormented many kings. He was slain by Lord Kṛṣṇa with his wife Satyabhāmā.

Some also celebrate Dīpāvalī as a commemoration of the wedding of Lakṣmī and Viṣṇu, while others observe it as the appearance day of Lakṣmī from the churning of the milky ocean. The Skanda Purāṇa enjoins that the diyas offered or dīpadānam are also symbolic of Sūrya, the Sun god, who transitions in this holy month of Kārtika.

The Descent Of Devas, The Beings Of Light

Dīpāvalī is indeed the festival when the divine beings of light, Devas and Devis, are available. It is said that they approach homes to bestow their grace, and thus homes, workspace, and precisely our inner space, body, and mind are to be kept in purity to welcome their divine light. Goddess Lakṣmī, who embodies all-opulence such as health, well-being, abundance, relationships, and spiritual progress, reigns supreme on Dīpāvalī. Goddess Lakṣmī also signifies the wealth of intelligence to keep the current of wealth and the ability to celebrate it righteously.

Culturally, Dīpāvalī is celebrated through festive fireworks, lights, flowers, sharing sweets, and worship, and various charitable acts are undertaken. Traditional lamps are prepared with flour, earth, rice, and flowers and placed in all corners, especially outside the main doors of houses. On the occasion of main Dīpāvalī, people decorate their homes and offices with marigold flowers, aśoka, mango and banana leaves. Lighting lamps throughout the house give immense protective benefits. A subtle divine protective sheath of circular waves of the absolute fire principle (teja tattva) emanating from the lamps surrounds the house. The protective sheath created by the lit lamps cleanses the house spiritually and destroys all negative energies inside the house and within us.

The ancient purificatory rituals on Dīpāvalī include physical and inner cleansing as a divine act. This early morning ritual develops mental purity, piety and a calm nature devoid of stress and negativity, which is followed by divine and pious beings. These rituals make us sātvic in nature and prepare us to absorb the divine energies actively available on Earth during the festival. Fresh clothes are adorned, and sacred spiritual acts such as worship, sacrifice and offerings further lend our inner light translucent.

“In the early morning of the Caturdaśī (the fourteenth day of the fortnight) of Dīpāvalī, Goddess Lakṣmī will reside in the oil and river goddess Gaṅgā in the warm water. Those who use these anointments and ritualistically bathe in the morning will not go to the realm of death.”

Padma Purāṇa [2.4.9.32]

The simple ritualistic acts in this light festival can awaken us to new beginnings, abundant with virtues. The traditional sweets symbolise maintaining loving relationships and sharing joy; new clothes and clean homes ensure everything old is discarded, including our vices and obstacles; new account books signify settling our karmic baggage and feeling complete; light works signify burning away the evil and instantly vanquishing darkness. On Dīpāvalī, as we light the diyas aglow, we can remind ourselves that ages of darkness in a lightless room can be dispelled instantly with just one light lamp and not by fighting with the blinding darkness.

Dīpāvalī leads us from the darkness to the pure light. Just as the physical birth is celebrated, Dīpāvalī can be a grand celebration of the Inner Light of the soul, the Eye behind our vision, and the reminder to identify and celebrate our inner intelligence. The essence is in lighting a single ‘diya’ first of our inner light, which outshines all darkness and dispels all ignorance.
