Hanuman – the Immortal Emissary of the Divine

There are exemplary beings who uphold the dhārmic laws of the universe, who are immortals commanding inestimable valour, and are easily accessible to truth-abiders. Hanumān stands as the crest of beings, just hearing about whose exploits humanity can instantly raise its fallen self by drawing from his inner-strength, foresight, and immaculate faculties.Hanumān, or Pavanputra Māruti is the supreme self who is – virtues, wealth, wisdom, mercy and accomplishments personified in their peak. He possesses a physical form of a vānara, an ape species, is the mystery and precept that a human striving for immensity must try unveiling - for Hanumān is verily divine and beyond even human or celestial pursuits - yet he took the humble position of a detached servitor wedded to the reality of Rāma. The Appearance of Hanumān Hanumān Jayanti appears in the bright full-moon fortnight of Caitra month, the propitious day of Caitra Pūrnimā1 . Hanumān is recognised as the rudra avatār of Supreme who chose to sport as the emissary, disciple and servitor of Śrī Rāma, setting precedence for humanity the brilliance of humbleness and innocent surrender in every heroic endeavour. 1 The April month by the Gregarian calendar. He was born to Kesari and Añjanā who is famed as the deity son of Vāyu, wind-god - the source of life-energy (prāṇa) that sustains all active-energies and wisdom of cosmos. Thus Hanumān can bestow protection, strength and purposeful activism to move even mountains, cross oceans, change forms (or decisions) with wiseness and swiftness of wind, the form of Brahman. Hanumān Jayanti is immensely celebrated as an important vedic festival especially by the adherents of lord Rāma, by those abiding in karma and bhakti yoga, and also by different communities. The devotees visit temples and apply the customary red-orangish hued tilaka of sindūr to their foreheads from Hanumān's idol, offer food charity and recite the Rāmayana, which is very dear to him. Wherever Rāmayana is recited or the name of Rāma is chanted with purity, Hanumān manifests in a mystical form, relishing the sacred verses. To those seeking eternal respite from fear, illness, weakness and evil-influences, Hanumān is worshipped as a deity with eight supernatural powers (aṣtamahā siddhis2 ), nine treasures (nava niddhis3) and the ability to conquer evil spirits and maleficent planetary effects. 2 Aṣta siddhi nava nidhi ke dātā, asa bara dīnha jānakī mātā (Tulasidasa) - Aṇimā: ability to reduce size; Mahima: ability to increase size infinitely; Garima: ability to increase one's weight infinitely; Laghima: Ability to become lighter than the lightest; Prāpti: ability to obtain anything; Prākāmya: ability to acquire anything desired; Iṣiṭva: lordship over creation; Vaśitva: Having control over all things. 3 Nine treasures are - Mahapadma: Great lotus flower; Padma: Lotus/ a Himalayan lake with treasures; Shankha: Conch shell; Makara: Crocodile/ Antimony; Kachchhapa: Tortoise or turtle shell; Mukunda: Cinnabar/ Quick Silver; Kunda: Jasmine/ Arsenic; Nila: Sapphire/ Antimony; Kharva: Cups, vessels baked in fire. Hanumān is endowed with divine boons from all devas - that made him most invincible, immortal and fault-free, and could not be killed by anyone or any weapon including Brahmāstra. Śrī Hanumān introduces himself and his valour in Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa while preparing to leap the ocean. तस्य अहम् शीघ्र वेगस्य शीघ्र गस्य महात्मनः | मारुतस्य औरसः पुत्रः प्लवने च अस्मि तत् समः || ४-६७-१० || tasya aham śīghra vegasya śīghra gasya mahātmanaḥ | mārutasya aurasaḥ putraḥ plavane ca asmi tat samaḥ || 4-67-10 "I am the lineal son of that great soul, high-speeded, brisk paced, life-sustaining Air-god Māruta, hence I am a co-equal to him in flights.” अयुतम् योजनानाम् तु गमिष्यामि इति मे मतिः || ४-६७-२७ लंकाम् वा अपि समुत्क्षिप्य गच्छेयम् इति मे मतिः | ayutam yojanānām tu gamiṣyāmi iti me matiḥ || 4-67-27 laṃkām vā api samutkṣipya gaccheyam iti me matiḥ | “I can traverse ten-thousand yojanas at a stretch, that is my certitude. or, I can even bring the isle of Lankā, extracting it from the ocean, thus is my confidence." While that choicest Hanumān with illimitable resplendence, roared out his capacities to find Sītā, on enormously increasing his physique, all the other apes and celestials were stunned to stare at his aggrandised form and thus were extremely gladdened. The Perfection of Hanumān None other than the Supreme can recite the perfections of Hanumān, who knows him in essence. A profoundly soul-waking narration from the Rāmāyana4 records the first meeting of Śrī Rāma with Hanumān. As Rāma and Laksmana neared the Ṛṣimukha mount in search of the ape-king Sugriva5 , they met with a very learned sage in the deserted forest, who spoke the most charming, polite and beneficial words to them, akin to vedic chants. This sage is none other than Hanumān who meets them in the semblance of a vedic sage.6. 4 Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa, 4-3-1 to 35 verses. 5 This incident took place when Śrī Rāma was searching for his abducted wife, Sita. 6 Sugriva, the banished vanara king, sent Hanumān to identify and test the two princes. पम्पा तीर रुहान् वृक्षान् वीक्षमाणौ समंततः | इमाम् नदीम् शुभ जलाम् शोभयन्तौ तरस्विनौ || ४-३-७ || pampā tīra ruhān vṛkṣān vīkṣamāṇau samaṃtataḥ | imām nadīm śubha jalām śobhayantau tarasvinau || 4-3-7 || “(Said Hanumān) - "You mighty ones are watching the trees grown on the banks of Pampa from all over, and owing to your presence on these banks you make this river with its propitious waters to shine forth... but you with your golden hue appear as courageous ones, yet you sigh over repeatedly... who are you that distress all the beings in this forest…” प्रभया पर्वत इन्द्रः असौ युवयोः अवभासितः | राज्य अर्हौ अमर प्रख्यौ कथम् देशम् इह आगतौ || 4-3-11 prabhayā parvata indraḥ asau yuvayoḥ avabhāsitaḥ | rājya arhau amara prakhyau katham deśam iha āgatau || "This lord-like mountain is effulgent with your effulgence, you two look as kingdom-worthy, or worthy divinities, but how have you reached this countryside now.” To Hanumān, the sententious wordsmith who thus spoke with marvellous memory power to recite from the Vedas7 , Śrī Rāma responded, addressing Lakṣmana - 7 In Vedas every syllable has many phonetically deflected variations, with many meanings. Hanumān had mastery over the Vedas, who expertly used them to eulogise the two divine princes. नूनम् व्यकरणम् कृत्स्नम् अनेन बहुधा श्रुतम् | बहु व्याहरता अनेन न किंचित् अप शब्दितम् || 4-3-29 nūnam vyakaraṇam kṛtsnam anena bahudhā śrutam | bahu vyāharatā anena na kiṃcit apa śabditam || "Definitely vedic grammar is fully and comprehensively learnt by him (Hanumān) and although much is said by him not a single word has gone amiss of verbiage; and he speaks propitious words that are heart-pleasing.” न मुखे नेत्रयोः च अपि ललाटे च भ्रुवोः तथा | अन्येषु अपि च सर्वेषु दोषः संविदितः क्वचित् || 4-3-30 na mukhe netrayoḥ ca api lalāṭe ca bhruvoḥ tathā | anyeṣu api ca sarveṣu doṣaḥ saṃviditaḥ kvacit || "On his (Hanumān’s) face or eyes, or on forehead or brows, or on other faculties of expression, no fault is found...even at the least.” एवम् गुण गणैर् युक्ता यस्य स्युः कार्य साधकाः | तस्य सिद्ध्यन्ति सर्वेऽर्था दूत वाक्य प्रचोदिताः || 4-3-35 evam guṇa gaṇair yuktā yasya syuḥ kārya sādhakāḥ | tasya siddhyanti sarve'rthā dūta vākya pracoditāḥ || "Should a King have this kind of deed accomplishers endowed with a variety of virtues, all his objectives will be achieved impelled by such an envoy's words..." Hanumān, the Ideal Emissary of Divine It is the need for humanity to uprise its dwindling Self - to revive one’s noble nature, culture and capacities. Achieving great feats bereft of inner-strength, succour and surrender do not lead to any glory or happiness, this is proven throughout history! Hanumān, the foremost ape taught us to forego the tendencies of uncultured purposeless life, irresolute endeavours, restless mind and egotistic pride for selfish pursuits. Indeed, every act of Hanumān amidst all adversities and demonic-challenges teaches us to abide in truth, unwavering mind power, unstoppable endeavour for divine work, developing extreme physical vigour, hinging in devotion and humility to Supreme. Hanumān is the essence of wisdom of Vedas, mental-agility and activism as that of wind, soul-strength as that of Sun8, mystic perfections as that of celestials, verily he is arrant devotion personified proving the supremacy of genteel heart, ripened wisdom and egoless non-doership in action! 8 Sun-god Sūya is the wisdom Guru of Hanumān. Hanumān is spotless in his deeds. Śrī Rāma glorifies and embraces Hanumān in his arms - the most sought-after praise from supreme - when he returns upon unfalteringly actualising the tasks of Rāma by locating and pacifying mother Sitā, and burning the irreproachable Lankā. कृतम् हनुमता कार्यम् सुमहद्भुवि दुर्लभम् | मनसापि यदन्येन न शक्यम् धरणीतले || ६-१-२ kṛtam hanumatā kāryam sumahadbhuvi durlabham | manasāpi yadanyena na śakyam dharaṇītale || 6-1-2 "A very outstanding task, the most arduous in the world has been done by Hanumān, which could not be carried out even in thought by any other on the surface of this earth." को विशेत्सुदुराधर्षाम् राक्षसैश्च सुरक्षिताम् || ६-१-५ यो वीर्यबलसम्पन्नो न समः स्याद्धनूमतः | ko viśetsudurādharṣām rākṣasaiśca surakṣitām || 6-1-5 yo vīryabalasampanno na samaḥ syāddhanūmataḥ | "Who is able to capture that citadel, by assault, that is exceedingly dangerous to be attacked and which is powerfully guarded by ogres, but one whose courage and valour are equal to Hanumān's?" यो हि भृत्यो नियुक्तः सन् भर्त्रा कर्मणि दुष्करे || ६-१-७ कुर्यात्तदुनुरागेण तमहुः पुरुषोत्तमम् | yo hi bhṛtyo niyuktaḥ san bhartrā karmaṇi duṣkare || 6-1-7 kuryāttadunurāgeṇa tamahuḥ puruṣottamam | "That servant to whom his master entrusts a difficult task and who performs it with zeal is said to be a superior person." Gosvāmi Tulasidāsa summarises the glory of the beloved of Śrī Rāma, Hanumān in this adulation as Hanumān Cālisā - बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके सुमिरौं पवन कुमार । बल बुद्धिविद्या देहु मोहिं हरहु कलेश विकार ॥ buddhihīna tanu jānike sumirauṃ pavana kumāra । bala buddhividyā dehu mohiṃ harahu kaleśa vikāra ॥ “Considering me as ignorant, I meditate on you, O son of wind-god (Hanumān). कुंड: चमेली/आर्सेनिक; नील: नीलम; खार्व : आग में पके हुए पात्र। हनुमान जी को सभी देवों से दिव्य वरदान प्राप्त हैं - जो वर प्रताप उन्हें सर्व अजेय, अमर और दोष मुक्त बनाते हैं, तथा किसी के द्वारा या ब्रह्मास्त्र सहित किसी भी अस्त्र से वध नहीं किया जा सकता था । श्री हनुमान ने समुद्र को छलांग लगाने की तैयारी करते हुए किष्किंधा काण्ड में स्वयं का तथा स्वयं की वीरता का परिचय दिया– तस्य अहम् शीघ्र वेगस्य शीघ्र गस्य महात्मनः | मारुतस्य औरसः पुत्रः प्लवने च अस्मि तत् समः || ४-६७-१० || "मैं उन महात्मन, शीघ्र वेग वाले, तेज गति वाले, जीवनदायी वायु-देवता मारुत का औरस पुत्र हूँ, इसलिए मैं उड़ानों में उनके समान हूँ ।" अयुतम् योजनानाम् तु गमिष्यामि इति मे मतिः || ४-६७-२७ लंकाम् वा अपि समुत्क्षिप्य गच्छेयम् इति मे मतिः | "मैं एक बार में दस हजार योजन पार कर सकता हूँ, यह मेरा प्रमाण है। अथवा, मैं लंका द्वीप को समुद्र से निकालकर भी ला सकता हूँ, ऐसा मेरा विश्वास है।" जब उन सबसे श्रेष्ठ वानर हनुमान ने सीता को खोजने की अपनी आत्म-सिद्धियों का गर्जन दिया, स्वीय शरीर को अधिक बढ़ाकर, अन्य सभी वानर और देवगण आदि, उनके उग्र विशाल रूप को ऊपर की ओर देखकर चकित रह गए तथा इस प्रकार अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए। हनुमानजी की सिद्धियां परमपुरुष के अन्यथा कोई भी हनुमानजी की सिद्धियों का उत्तम गुणगान नहीं कर सकता, जो उन्हें तत्त्व रूप में जानते हैं। रामायण का एक गहन आत्म-जागृत वर्णन हनुमान का श्रीराम से प्रथम मिलन का कथागान करता है।4 जैसे ही राम और लक्ष्मण वानर-राजा सुग्रीव5 की खोज में ऋषिमुख पर्वत के निकट पहुंचे, वे निर्जन वन प्रदेश में एक अत्यन्त विद्वान वेदपाठी ऋषि से मिले, जिन्होंने वैदिक मंत्रों के समान सबसे आकर्षक, विनम्र और लाभकारी शब्द बोले। यह ऋषि कोई और नहीं बल्कि हनुमान हैं जो राघव से एक वैदिक ब्राह्मण के वेश में मिलते हैं।6. 4 किंकिंधा काण्ड, 4-3-1 से 35 श्लोक। 5 यह घटना तब हुई जब श्रीराम अपनी अपहृत पत्नी सीता की खोज कर रहे थे। 6 निर्वासित वानर राजा सुग्रीव ने हनुमान को दो राजकुमारों की पहचान और परीक्षण करने के लिए भेजा। पम्पा तीर रुहान् वृक्षान् वीक्षमाणौ समंततः | इमाम् नदीम् शुभ जलाम् शोभयन्तौ तरस्विनौ || ४-३-७ || "(हनुमान ने कहा) - "आप पराक्रमी पम्पा के तीर पर उगने वाले वृक्षों को चारों ओर से देख रहे हैं, और इन तटों पर आपकी उपस्थिति के कारण आप इस नदी को शुभ जल सहित शोभामान बनाते हैं ... किन्तु आप जो सुनहरे रंग वर्ण के हैं, वीरवान के रूप में दिखाई देते हैं, तथापि आप पुनः पुनः आहें भरते हैं ... आप कौन हैं जो इस वन में सभी प्राणियों को दुःखी करते हैं..." प्रभया पर्वत इन्द्रः असौ युवयोः अवभासितः | राज्य अर्हौ अमर प्रख्यौ कथम् देशम् इह आगतौ || 4-3-11 "यह देव रूपी पर्वत आपके तेज से तेजोमय है, आप दोनों राज्य के योग्य, या योग्य अमर देवों के रूप में दिखते हैं, किन्तु अब आप इस ग्रामीण देश में कैसे पहुंचे।" वेदों7 का पाठ करने हेतु अद्भुत स्मृति शक्ति सहित कथन करने वाले भावनात्मक शब्दकार हनुमान को, श्रीराम ने लक्ष्मण को संबोधित करते हुए प्रत्युत्तर दिया – 7 वेदों में प्रत्येक अक्षर शब्द में कई ध्वन्यात्मक रूप से विक्षेपित भिन्नताएं हैं जिनके कई अर्थ होते है। हनुमान को वेद विद्या में सिद्धि प्राप्त थी, जो दो दिव्य राजकुमारों की स्तुति करने हेतु उनका कुशलता से उपयोग कर रहे थे। नूनम् व्यकरणम् कृत्स्नम् अनेन बहुधा श्रुतम् | बहु व्याहरता अनेन न किंचित् अप शब्दितम् || 4-3-29 "( श्री राम:) निश्चित रूप से वैदिक व्याकरण पूर्ण रूपेण व्यापक रूप से उनके (हनुमान) द्वारा सिद्ध है और यद्यपि इन्होनें बहुत कुछ कहा है, एक भी शब्द कथन में किञ्चित् अनुचित नहीं है; और यह हृदय को प्रसन्न करने वाले शुभ वचन बोलते हैं।" न मुखे नेत्रयोः च अपि ललाटे च भ्रुवोः तथा | अन्येषु अपि च सर्वेषु दोषः संविदितः क्वचित् || 4-3-30 "उनके (हनुमान के) मुख या नेत्रों पर, या ललाट या भौंहों पर, या अभिव्यक्ति के अन्य संकायों पर, कोई दोष क्वचित् भी नहीं पाया जाता है ।" एवम् गुण गणैर् युक्ता यस्य स्युः कार्य साधकाः | तस्य सिद्ध्यन्ति सर्वेऽर्था दूत वाक्य प्रचोदिताः || 4-3-35 "यदि एक राजा के पास इस तरह के कार्य सिद्ध कर्ता साधक हैं, जो विभिन्न प्रकार के गुणों से संपन्न होते हैं, तो उनके सभी उद्देश्यों को ऐसे दूत के वाक्यों से सिद्धि हो जायेंगे..." हनुमान, दिव्यता के आदर्श दूत मानवता हेतु यह आवश्यक है कि वह स्वीय पतित होती अत्मा को उभारे - महान प्रकृति, संस्कृति और क्षमताओं को पुनर्जीवित करने हेतु। आत्मिक-शक्ति, सहनशीलता और समर्पण के विना महान उपलब्धि प्राप्त करने से कोई महिमा या सुख सिद्ध नहीं होता, यह पूरे इतिहास में सिद्ध है! हनुमान, सर्व प्रमुख वानर;
