Motherhood – A Woman’s Fulfilment

Adulating mother as a goddess, and god as mother is an inherent aspect of the vedic civilisation. The underpin of vedic dharma is ‘mātṛvat paradāreṣu – all women are mother 1 ’ and ‘mātṛa devo bhava 2 – mother is god (to be served)’. The unbroken living traditions bow down to the ideal cosmic mother who transcends herself becoming our personal mother. Mother being the constant thread that gives the most precious ‘life, body, and intelligence’, is also revered as a direct umbilical cord (thread) that connects us to divinity.

1 Even a husband-wife relationship is expected to evolve to the level of adoring each other in motherly affection.

2 taittirīya 1.11

Mother in Sanskrit is etymologically named as ‘mātṛ’ (मातृ), ‘mātā’ or ‘ammā or ‘ambā’, ‘janani’ – which refers to the divine mother or personified energy of the supreme; ‘mātṛ’ also means the one who possesses true wisdom. One’s living mother is literally god for that man; while motherhood is associated with the fulfilment of being a woman.

The Vedas – Devī Sūkta, Rātrī Sukta, and Ṛg Veda give her the most exalted status. By worshipping God as the divine mother, not only the motherly traits such as tenderness, forgiveness, are attributed to the divine, but also her fathomless grace and affection, her patience as wide as skies, is sought unreservedly.

Mother as Gods & Creation

The feminine is accepted as the mother of gods, the womb of cosmic creation. In a temple, the living deity is hosted in a sacred-womb space called the garbha gṛiha, thus the temple is regarded as the mother itself, the pristine source of highest life-energy.

In vedic culture, the whole motherhood is elevated as the divine principle, in itself, not only is the mother deemed sacred. The life-bestowing maternal power is glorified in ancient vedas repeatedly, wherein all that is sacred, pure and powerful is given the status of a mother. She is identified with several honorifics such as Aditi3, the mother of devas, emperors, sages, as Sarasvatī, the goddess and celestial waters, as Uṣā, the dawn mother, and Pṛthvī, the earth mother.

3 Aditi literally means ‘boundless, non-binding goddess, who affectionately releases the aspirant from worldly clutches.

Womanhood as Mother

Amusingly, the appellation of woman as a mother is accorded not only to a woman who has a physical child but to a female in general – be she a child, girl, youth or ageing – for a woman acts as a mother constantly in ways beyond the biological motherhood. It is indeed a woman in whom lies the seed power (sakti) to turn a novice child, a society, even a generation into cultured, noble, meritorious humans, inasmuch as protecting her subjects and retaining genetical and cultural continuity.

The dharma asserts that the first and foremost criteria for success of a society is that women are accorded the high respect that they rightly deserve. Sings the Yajurveda 6.36, “O Mother! May the society appreciate your potential. May they seek your blessings from east, west, north, south and everywhere. And may you bless them with prosperity and happiness.”

Saptamātṛkās – The 7 Eternal Mothers

It is the privilege of a mother to bring up her children, to mother their distinctive natural gifts. Bringing with her life-sustaining blessings, and giving consciousness (to the unconscious), the mother imparts to the world her wonderful radiance. The Vedas revere the feminine aspect of Divinity by recognising Saptamātṛkās or mātaraḥ, seven sacred mothers who exist in the worldly realm, and directly enrich our lives4

4 ātma-mātā guroḥ patnī brāhmaṇī rāja-patnikā । dhenur dhātrī tathā pṛthvī saptaitā mātaraḥ smṛtāḥ ॥

Ātma-mātā, the biological mother, is the ultimate mother and one’s first guru, who, bearing acute pains, nurtures the child, thus lending an indelible foundation for one’s whole life and consciousness, a debt ever irredeemable. Even the avatārs who took birth from mother’s earthly womb (as yonijā5 ) to relish the tender mellows of playing in the lap of mother6. Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is illustriously conferred with the title ‘devakīnandana’, the son of mother Devakī, killed demons to rescue her from tragic imprisonment, gave immense love and constantly served her in Dvārikā city.

5 One born from a womb.

6 The divine avatars are birthless, being the supreme, yet they enjoy taking the role of an unassuming child, to relish the mother-child relationship.

Guroḥ-patnī, the wife of spiritual teacher, is deemed the cosmic mother, who bestows motherly care and love, during the child’s learning days. Next mother, Brāhmaṇi, the wife of a Brāhmaṇa, one dedicated to scriptural study and education. She too fosters the noble qualities and spiritual knowledge in students.

During the student days of Śrī Kṛṣṇa at sage Sandīpanī gurukula7, the brothers Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa, as children to their Guru’s wife, obeyed and served her greatly. They went on to revive and bring back her lost child from the jaws of death, searching for him in all realms of universe.

7 The vedic residential school where children lived and learnt from Guru, leaving their homes.

The fourth mother is Rāja-patnī, the wife of the king, she is equally revered as the mother of all subjects. It is in her able leadership and shelter, that the childlike citizens live in wellness.

The fifth mother to us is Dhenū, the cow. Mother cow is extolled as the most propitious Gau Mātā; her very presence exudes motherly calm and relieves all stress. As she gives us the milk to sustain all our life, deeply nourishing our saptadhatus8 , cow to us is verily the mother. In the wish-fulfilling cow, are said to reside all divinities and just the holy sight of her is auspicious. Even her excreta is taken as holy and purifying. Śrī Kṛṣṇa in his earthly sports as Gopāla, the friend and protector of cows, set the greatest precedence to serving and loving cows and the agricultural community. Cows are even taken at par with Upaniṣads – सर्वोपनिषदो गावो दोग्धा गोपालनन्दनः – The Upaniṣads are cows, lord Gopālanandana is the cow milker.

8 As per Āyurveda, Saptadhātus are the seven bodily tissues that provide nourishment to the whole body.

The sixth mother is Dhātrī, the foster or care-taking mother, who affectionately nurses the child. Historically, the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa records that Śrī Rāma, though born to mother Kausalyā, was ever more nursed by his co-mother Kaikeyi. Rāma reciprocated her affection for life and when she sent him to the forest, he took it as the greatest service to the mother to abide by her words, without a single sigh or demurral. So also is evident in the life of Śrī Kṛṣṇa for his foster mother Yaśodā and all the motherly cowherd women. Kṛṣṇa gave the greatest joy to all the mothers of Vrindāvana, ever increasing their bliss. Sometimes mother Yaśodā and gopī mothers would tell Kṛṣṇa, “Fetch this or that article”, sometimes they would order him to bring a measuring pot or even dance in barter for a scoop of butter, and child Kṛṣṇa, when thus ordered, would try to fetch and please them.

The seventh mother is Pṛthvī, the earth goddess. In her are found the loving embrace and qualities of all the mothers. Thus, anyone who is deprived of motherly love can find solace in her bosoms by just touching her soils and gardens.

Mother is a relation unlike all. Our consciousness and every other relation originates from our mother. A woman is not the object of a man’s desire, but she is the mother, the maker, the provider and keeper, and the leader. The mother in every woman commands our soleful affection and care, as there is none greater to mother on earth.

“There is no shade like a mother, no resort-like a mother, no security and savior like a mother, no other ever-giving fountain of life!

– Skanda Purāṇa, Ch 6.103-104

While each day of life is indebted to the mother, may we offer tribute to all our mothers on this day and seek her loving blessings.

nāsti mātṛsamā chāyā nāsti mātṛsamā gatiḥ।
nāsti mātṛsamaṃ trāṇaṃ nāsti mātṛsamā prapā॥
