The Vishnu Sahasranaamam is found in the great epic Mahabharatha written by sage VedaVyasa. ‘Sahasra’ in Sanskrit means thousand, and ‘naamam’ refers to names. Therefore, Vishnu Sahasranaamam refers to the Thousand names of Lord Maha Vishnu. It is stated that Beeshma, before leaving his mortal body gave a long discourse to Yudhistra on various aspects of life and Dharma.
On being asked who the Supreme God was and whose worship would bring about salvation, Bheeshma recited the Thousand names of Lord Mahavishnu, in the presence of Lord Krishna.
The Vishnu Sahasranaamam is considered to be the most sacred stotra chanted by many Hindus, especially those of the Vaisnava sect. The highest purpose of the recitation is the attainment of mosksha, the Supreme Spiritual good. Recitation of the sloka with devotion and perseverance ensures that no evil befalls the reciter. It brings calmness of mind, courage, fame, eternal knowledge, good health, and prosperity.
