Connecting with the energies of nature, planets and higher realms or beings is interconnected with the Vedic traditions. This stems from the science that everything existing has a specific influence over us, at varied degrees. Inherently, we all are deeply connected and united with the cosmos. The celebration of nature and specifically the planetary and seasonal changes symbolize the art of harmonizing with the Creation. Honoring one such tradition is the worship or seeking the grace of the Moon. A full-moon night of Śarada season (September to October) is an absolute cooling delight to experience that comes once a year, when the Moon sparkles our lives with highest blessings and healing properties.Śarada Pūrnimā (also known as Kumāra Pūrnimā, Kojagiri Pūrnimā, Navanna Pūrnimā) is a sacred festival honoring the full-radiance of the Moon planet in the season named Śarada (October). It is also a harvest festival celebrated on the full-moon day of Asvin1 , marking the end of the monsoon season. 1 the Hindu lunar month of Ashvin (September to October). The full-moon of the Śarada Pūrnimā is an extraordinary planetary occurrence for it is only on this full-moon that the Moon deity, Candra, is composed of all sixteen Kalas2 (qualitative art forms), radiating the brightest rays filled with nectar. Normally there are twelve full-moons in a year with various spiritual and planetary denotations and names. But among all, the Śarada Pūrnimā has its pristine glory, which is unmatched from spiritual, emotional and health perspectives. 2 Kala is a unit of measure of one’s power or quality, a part of the human personality. More kalas in a person indicates that he/she will have more influencing qualities. A person of 16 kalas creates a perfect person. Lord Kṛṣṇa is considered to have all the 16 kalas in their fullness. The Moon is the only planet capable of all 16 forms that are possessed by none of the other heavenly bodies. These 16 art forms or divine capabilities of the Moon are – vicāra (thought), saundarya (beauty) , svāstha (health), ichhāpūrtī (fulfilment of desires), vidyā (education), teja (inner radiance), śānti (peace), kīrti (glory), prakāśa (light), dhana (wealth), prema (love), sthāyitva (stability), karmashīlatā (ability to work), sukha (happiness). We too can imbibe these higher qualities as much as we connect and align ourselves to the Moon. Astronomically on this full-moon night, the Moon is closest to the Earth and the positive energies emanating from all the planets of space comes to the Earth through the lunar rays, which is most beneficial for us. Meditating, worshiping or just staying seated under the Moon’s rays on this special night, ensures peace of mind as well as coolness, happiness, prosperity and opulence, which are unfound through any other practice. This night, therefore, is celebrated as a sacred opportunity to naturally heal from mental sufferings, as the darkness embodying ignorance and tribulations end with the sight of the Śarada moon. Even today this tradition continues on and cultural folk festivals are organised throughout the night, under the Moon’s rays. Deities in temples are dressed in white colour signifying the brightness of the moon, while fasting is observed during the day. The Significance of Moon on Mind and Well-being The vedic astrology lends prominence to the Moon as it is associated with one's state of mind. The Moon is called Candra, which in Sanskrit means "bright and shining with nectarine radiance.” The Moon is also famously called Soma in the oldest extant Vedas, named after the sacred nectar drink used in the Vedic sacrifices. The bright Moon is considered a benefic of the highest order, and the dark Moon is considered a malefic. It is believed that the Moon rules the mind, mood, one’s versatility, and when benefic it confers the power of meditation, concentration and resistance against diseases. While in modern times, the Sun-sign is accepted for one’s birth date, in the vedic tradition, the Moon-sign3 of a person is considered as one’s birth-sign. Such is the importance of the Moon in the Vedic culture. The ancients, knowing the energies of Moon or Candra have actively sought its cooling grace at nightfall to strengthen the mind, purify the blood and organs, restore the nervous system and engage in sacred uplifting practices. The nectar or amrta radiated by the Moon is accepted as the elixir for life, joy and nourishment (called rasa), as a loving mother, who cures all mental afflictions, relieves sorrows and balances the para-sympathetic nerves as well. 3 Moon-sign is astrologically calculated when the Moon enters the part of the sign it was in at the time of one’s birth. That time is considered as one’s birth date and not the English calendar date. Moon has been known as a left-sided presiding deity, a calming, restorative vehicle of the mind that receives the light of the soul, which is the Sun (right-sided). It is associated with the human's left-side and all creative brain functions. It also adorns the head of Lord Śiva, representing the perfect state of meditation and eternal calm. As revealed in the Matsya Purāṇa, seeing the Moon deity at the time of moon's rise on this full-moon night, the enlightened Sages or Brahmaṛṣīs accepted that the Moon is the lord of life-energy; and at the same time the divine beings such as the Pitṛ:, Devatās and Gandharvas propitiated the Moon with Vedic mantras. Due to this propitiation, the bright radiance of the Moon increased even more. Moon is also said to be the lord of ancestors and this night is said to be the most suitable time for their worship. Thus the famous celebrations include the full absorption of the Moon’s nectarine rays on oneself, on the herbs and foods, the water, and a customary sweet milk preparation (kheer) is kept under the open sky for the night, which is honoured the very next morning. Vivid descriptions of this nectarine night are replete in epics. As per Nārada Purāṇa, on this full-moon night, Lakṣmī, the goddess of wealth, descends on the earth to watch the deeds and grace the earthlings with the wealth of wellness, beauty, herbs and opulence. The festival of Śarada Pūrnimā is celebrated with spiritual pilgrimages undertaken all over India, yet it has exclusive relevance for Vrindāvan, Braj Mandal, the sacred childhood place of Lord Kṛṣṇa. The epic scriptures glorify this night as the Rāsa Pūrnimā, the 'Kaumudi Festival' or 'Rāsotsava' celebration. Lord Kṛṣṇa with his consort Rādhā, engaged in joyous plays of Rāsalīlā from this auspicious night, while Lord Śiva joined his sacred sports taking the feminine form of a youthful cowherd maiden as Gopeśvar Mahādeva. तदोडुराज: ककुभ: करैर्मुखंप्राच्या विलिम्पन्नरुणेन शन्तमै: । स चर्षणीनामुदगाच्छुचो मृजन्प्रिय: प्रियाया इव दीर्घदर्शन: ॥ २ ॥ tadoḍurājaḥ kakubhaḥ karair mukhaṁ prācyā vilimpann aruṇena śantamaiḥ sa carṣaṇīnām udagāc chuco mṛjan priyaḥ priyāyā iva dīrgha-darśanaḥ दृष्ट्वा कुमुद्वन्तमखण्डमण्डलंरमाननाभं नवकुङ्कुमारुणम् । वनं च तत्कोमलगोभी रञ्जितंजगौ कलं वामदृशां मनोहरम् ॥ ३ ॥ dṛṣṭvā kumudvantam akhaṇḍa-maṇḍalaṁ ramānanābhaṁ nava-kuṅkumāruṇam vanaṁ ca tat-komala-gobhī rañjitaṁ jagau kalaṁ vāma-dṛśāṁ manoharam The moon then rose, anointing the face of the eastern horizon with the reddish hue of His comforting rays, and thus dispelling the pain of all who watched Him rise. The moon was like a beloved husband who returns after a long absence and adorns the face of His beloved wife with red kuṅkuma. Lord Kṛṣṇa saw the unbroken disk of the full Moon glowing with the red effulgence of newly applied vermilion, as if it were the face of the goddess of fortune.” - Bhāgavata Purāṇam (10.29.2-3) Śrī Kṛṣṇa gives prominence to the Moon, – nakṣatrāṇām ahaṁ śaśī – Among the stars, I am the Moon ( Gītā 10.21). गामाविश्य च भूतानि धारयाम्यहमोजसा । पुष्णामि चौषधीः सर्व्वाः सोमो भूत्वा रसात्मकः ॥ १५.१३ ॥ gāmāviśya ca bhūtāni dhārayāmyahamojasā । puṣṇāmi cauṣadhīḥ sarvvāḥ somo bhūtvā rasātmakaḥ ॥15.13॥ Permeating the earth, I support all beings with My vital energy, and becoming the Moon, I nourish all the plants (herbs and medicines) with the life-giving sap.” - Bhagavad Gītā Moon, embodying the Supreme, showers nectar of coolness, nutritional power and peace on the earth. When its bright full-rays fall on crops, trees, plants, drinks and food, then the nectar being absorbed in them, they become life-giving, palatable and nourishing.
