Ugadi, the Vedic New Year

The vedic festivals and lifestyle are living testimonies to the divine wisdom practiced in the yore. The festivities along with the traditions and rituals passed down from the ancestors are no ordinary customs based on beliefs. They represent the vast depth of spiritual and cultural greatness of a civilization that lived in wellness, fully aligned to the acts and cycles of time. Ugādi, the ancient New Year festival, is celebrated as an indication of prosperity and abundance, when the sacred nature as well as life, the Sun and the Supreme are all extolled amidst the blossoming spring. The name Yugādi or Ugādi is derived from the Sanskrit words ‘yuga’ (age) and ādi (beginning): "the beginning of a new age". Ugādi occurs on "Chaitra Śuddha Pādyami" or the first day of the bright-fortnight of the Indian lunar month of Chaitra1 . There exist ecological, historical and spiritual reasons to mark the commencement of the year on this first day of Chaitra. Ugādi sets the new astronomical cycle into motion, marking a shift in the moon’s lunar orbit2 . Also known as Samvatsarādi, Guḍi Paḍvā3 and Viṣu, Ugādi is zestfully celebrated throughout India, especially by the people living in the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and partial population of Tamil Nadu. 1 late March or early April of the Gregorian calendar. 2 This marks the start date of the Hindu lunar calendar. 3 Literally meaning the ‘flag (guḍi) of lord brahma (paḍva)’. The Historic Glory of Ugādi According to a Vedic belief, in the primordial times, prior to the manifestation and time, lord Brahma had self-manifested from the lotus navel of the supreme Mahāviṣṇu and had undergone severe austerities to engage in the cosmic act of Creation of universe and all life-forms. When the source of wisdom - the Vedas, the planetary systems such as the Sun, Moon and stars, oceans and life-forms were wonderfully created, then as Brahma meditated upon the creation of the Time factor into age cycles (or yugas), a terrible demon stole away the Vedas into the nether world, with the motive to lord over time and creation. Śrī Viṣṇu, who is the supreme protector and sustainer, then incarnated as Matysa, the fish avatar and annihilated the demon. He saved the Vedas, the human-race, along with the grains and vegetations, establishing the reign of truth. Thus prayed Brahma, ब्रह्मोवाच नमोऽस्त्वनन्ताय सहस्रमूर्तये सहस्रपादाक्षिशिरोरुबाहवे । सहस्रनाम्ने पुरुषाय शाश्वते सहस्रकोटियुगधारिणे नमः ॥ २८॥ brahmovāca namo'stvanantāya sahasramūrtaye sahasrapādā-kṣiśirorubāhave । sahasranāmne puruṣāya śāśvate sahasrakoṭi-yugadhāriṇe namaḥ ॥ 28॥ “(Lord) Brahma spoke - my prostrations unto the Infinite, Immortal Being, who has many thousands of divine forms, thousands of feet, thousands of eyes and thousands of arms; prostrations unto the Eternal Being who is the soul in all beings, who has thousands of Names; the creator and bearer of billions of Yugas (time cycles).” - Śrī Viṣṇusahasranāma, Uttarabhāga Thus, the Ugādi Brahmotsavam is celebrated to worship Śrī Viṣṇu, the Supreme and Brahma, as the Time, seeking their grace and protection for a new year ahead. One of the key rituals practised is the sacred mantra chantings by the Brāhmaṇas and a tradition of reading the vedic calendar and predicting the future auspicious times of the new year ahead, called the Pañcāñga Śravanam. The village communities gather around in temples, faith-fixed to listen to these sacred chantings to uplift their merits. Spiritually, on this day, as per the astronomical aspect, the Tej and Prajāpati frequencies4 are effective in large measures. During the sunrise on this day, the Caitanya (consciousness) emitted from these frequencies can be absorbed and retained deeply in us. Therefore, the ritual involves early morning sun & nature worship and meditation of Guḍi (flag) within 5-10 minutes of the sunrise. 4 There are 108 frequencies, each from the four parts (charans) of the twenty-seven lunar asterisms from the region of lunar asterisms (nakshtralok / karmadevlok) 27×4108 reach the earth. They disintegrate further into four types of frequencies – yama, surya, prajapati and sanyukta (conjoint). Thus, by offering worship on the Ugādi day to the Supreme who remains ever manifest on earth in the form of Time, sacred knowledge, sages and nature, the traditional people engage in various pious acts. The medieval texts and inscriptions record major charitable donations made to the Hindu temples, and Brāhmaṇa communities on this day. A Celebration of All Tastes of Life When the colourful blossoms of Jasmine flowers, which symbolises growth, are offered to the Divine, when the crop fields are ripen to be harvested, Ugādi is celebrated, welcoming the fresh new cycle of Time. Many customs of the Ugādi festival form an integral part of traditions practised with faith for ages. One such local custom is the ritualistic preparation of the Ugādi Pacaḍi - the traditional special dish, representing all the colours and flavours of nature that amazingly symbolise the essence of life and its aspects. Ugādi Pacaḍi, along with other local sweet delicacies, is prepared with six-flavors from fresh local harvests, which Āyurveda recommends as saḍ-rasa5 meal for complete wellness - jaggery (sweet) - symbolises sweetness and happiness; rock salt - embodies the taste of life; tamarind - symbolises the sour or challenging experiences of life; raw mango - the tangy flavour adds surprises and new moments to life; neem flowers - the bitter hurdles; and chilli powder - the spicy experiences of rage. Culturally, mixing all these into one dish symbolises the rich-flavorful balanced experience of human life, and the acceptance of all pluralities. 5 The six-flavors to be included in a healthy meal. Agriculturally, Ugādi marks the day of the first-ploughing ceremony, a core ritual when the farming communities prepare new field ploughs with an auspicious wood selected for the specific year. The ploughs are decorated with turmeric pastes and their bullocks too are decorated with vermillion marks, and mother earth and local deities are worshipped. All rituals followed on this day have their sublime significance. The Ugādi festival in South India involves deep purification and cleaning of homes. The people of Andhra and Karnataka rise early, apply herbal oils and adorn pure garments, as they proceed to worship the sun-diety. They decorate their homes, temples and work-places with sacred mango leaves and flowers, and practice the ritual of placing kalaśa with coconut and banana leaves at the entrance of their homes. The sacred cow-dung is smeared in front of their dwellings and then the colourful floral kolams or muggus (rangolis) are artistically decorated on earth with organic vibrant powders for natural detoxification, purification, harmony and peace. Temple visits, cultural music festivals such as Kavi Sammelan (poetry event) are held in several localities, while abundant charity, initiating new ventures and sharing delicacies with all on this auspicious new year day bestow fulfilment in hearts. In the Maharashtra state, it is celebrated as Guḍi Paḍvā which wards-off all evils, invites prosperity in all western homes. A key ritual is hoisting of the Gudi flags after worship made using a colourful silk cloth tied atop a bamboo stick with neem and mango tree flowers along with the Sākhar gāthi (a sugar-cane garland). The kalaśa vessel on the bamboo stick (in an inverted position) signifies the victory of goodness and truth. Ugādi indeed turns ordinary men and women into luminous beings of truth, hope and fortitude, as they peel through the darkness of ignorance, and arise early mornings, bathe in pure oils and sunrays, bounce in a new fervour of joy and gratitude to begin a new year, verily a new life! The children and youth feel assured with a sense of joyous gatherings, lush greenery, rich flavours, and smiling faces. We invite you to explore the source vedic books, which are life companions for a spiritual seeker, published by Vedic Cosmos - The Guru Gita, the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali --- हिंदी --- उगादी, वैदिक नव वर्ष का अगमन वैदिक उत्सव एवं जीवनशैली व्यवहारिक रूप में मनाए जाने वाले दिव्य ज्ञान के जीवंत प्रमाण हैं। परंपराएं तथा उनके उत्सव, पूर्वजों से पारित विधि-अनुष्ठान कोई सामान्य रीति-प्रथाएं नहीं हैं जो केवल लोक विश्वासों पर आधारित हैं। वे एक उच्च सभ्यता की आध्यात्मिक एवं सांस्कृतिक महानता की विशाल गहराई का प्रतीक हैं जो शान्ति, स्वास्थ व कल्याण में सजीव थे, तथा पूर्णतय काल के कृत्यों एवं चक्रों से संबन्धित थे। उगादी, नव वर्ष का प्राचीन पारंपरिक उस्तव है, जो समृद्धि एवं सम्पन्नता के उस्तव के रूप में मनाया जाता है, जब प्रफुल्लित वसंत ऋतु के मध्य पवित्र प्रकृति के सहित जीवन, सूर्य एवं परमेश्वर सभी की स्तुति-अराधना की जाती है। युगादी या उगादी नाम संस्कृत के शब्द 'युग' (आयु) एवं आदि (आरम्भ) से निर्मित है - अर्थात् "एक नव युग का आरम्भ"। उगादि उत्सव "चैत्र शुद्ध पद्यमी" या चैत्र के भारतीय चंद्र मास के शुक्ल पक्ष के प्रथम दिवस में प्रकट होता है1 . । चैत्र के इस प्रथम दिवस वर्ष के आरम्भ को चिह्नित करने के लिए पारिस्थितिक, ऐतिहासिक एवं आध्यात्मिक कारण उपस्थित हैं। उगादी नव खगोलीय चक्र को गति में स्थापित करता है, जो चंद्रमा की चंद्र-कक्षा में एक बदलाव को चिह्नित करता है2 . । संवत्सरादि, गुड़ी पड़वा3 एवं विषु के नाम-रूपों में भी प्रविख्यात, उगादी समस्त भारत में उत्साह से मनाया जाता है, विशेष रूप से कर्नाटक, आंध्र प्रदेश, महाराष्ट्र राज्यों और तमिलनाडु की आंशिक आबादी में रहने वाले लोगों द्वारा।। दक्षिणी राज्यों में, उगादी एक अनूठा उस्तव है जिसमें कई पारंपरिक मूल्यों के साथ साठ से अधिक नाम हैं। 4 1 ग्रेगोरियन कैलेंडर के मार्च के अंत या अप्रैल के आरम्भ में। 2 यह हिंदू चंद्र कैलेंडर के आरंभ को चिह्नित करता है। 3 शाब्दिक अर्थ है 'भगवान ब्रह्मा (पाव) का ध्वज(गुड़ी)'। 4 उगादि को प्रभाव, विभव, शुक्ल, प्रमोद्युत, प्रजोतपट्टी, अंगिरसा, श्रीमुख, भाव, युवा, धाता आदि नामों से भी जाना जाता है। उगादी की ऐतिहासिक महिमा वैदिक मान्यता के अनुसार, आदिकाल में प्रकट होने एवं युग काल की रचना से भी पूर्व, भगवान ब्रह्मादेव महाविष्णु की कमल-नाभि से स्वयं-प्रकट हुए थे एवं उन्होंने ब्रह्मांड तथा सभी जीवन-रूपों प्रजातियों इत्यादि के दिव्य निर्माण के ब्रह्मांडीय कार्य में संलग्न होने के लिए गंभीर तपस्या संपन्न की थी। जब ज्ञान के स्रोत - वेद, ग्रह-नक्षत्र जैसे सूर्य, चंद्रमा एवं नक्षत्र, महासागर एवं जीवन-रूप अद्भुत रूप से निर्मित हुए थे, उस काल में जब ब्रह्मा ने युग के काल चक्र के निर्माण पर ध्यान दिया, तब एक भयानक राक्षस ने वेदों को काल और सृष्टि पर प्रभुता करने के उद्देश्य से, नीचे की दुनिया में चुरा लिया। श्री विष्णु, जो परम् रक्षक एवं पालनकर्ता हैं, मत्स्य अवतार के रूप में अवतरित हुए एवं राक्षस का वध किया। उन्होंने सत्य के राज्य की स्थापना करते हुए वेदों, मानव-जाति को अनाज और वनस्पतियों के साथ बचाया। तत्पश्चात ब्रह्मा ने इस प्रकार प्रार्थना की, ब्रह्मोवाच नमोऽस्त्वनन्ताय सहस्रमूर्तये सहस्रपादाक्षिशिरोरुबाहवे । सहस्रनाम्ने पुरुषाय शाश्वते सहस्रकोटियुगधारिणे नमः ॥ २८॥ "ब्रह्मा (देव) नें स्तुति की - अनंत, शाश्वत को मेरा साष्टांग प्रणाम, जिनके कई सहस्र दिव्य रूप हैं, सहस्र पाद, सहस्र नेत्र एवं सहस्र भुजाएं हैं; वें सनातन पुरुष को नमन, जो सभी प्राणियों में आत्मा है, जिनके सहस्र नाम हैं; सहस्र कोटि युगों (काल चक्र) के निर्माता एवं धारण कर्ता।" - श्री विष्णुसहस्रनाम, उत्तरभाग इस प्रकार, उगादि ब्रह्मोत्सव को समय के रूप में श्री विष्णु, सर्वोच्च और ब्रह्मा की पूजा करने के लिए मनाया जाता है, जो काल के रूप में प्रकट होते हैं, आने वाले नव वर्ष के लिए उनकी कृपा एवं सुरक्षा की प्रार्थना करते हैं। प्रचलित प्रमुख अनुष्ठानों में से एक ब्राह्मणों द्वारा पवित्र मंत्र जाप एवं वैदिक कैलेंडर को पढ़ने एवं आने वाले नव वर्ष के भविष्य के शुभ तिथियों की भविष्यवाणी करने की परंपरा है, जिसे पंचांग श्रवणम कहा जाता है। आस्था-स्थिर गाँव के समुदाय मंदिरों में एकत्र होते हैं, इन पवित्र मंत्रों को सुनने के लिए, उनके पूण्य उत्थान के लिए। आध्यात्मिक दृष्टि से इस दिवस खगोलीय विद्या के अनुसार तेज एवं प्रजापति की तरंगें5 बड़ी मात्रा में प्रभावी होती हैं। इस दिवस सूर्योदय की तिथि में, इन आवृत्तियों से उत्सर्जित चैतन्य (चेतना) को हम में अवशोषित एवं गहराई से आत्म-समाहित कर सकते है। इसलिए, इस प्रथा में सूर्योदय के ५-१० मिनट के भीतर प्रभात के सूर्य एवं प्रकृति पूजा, तथा गुड़ी का ध्यान सम्मिलित है। 5 108 आवृत्तियाँ हैं, जिनमें से प्रत्येक सत्ताईस चंद्र नक्षत्रों के चार भागों (चरणों) में से चंद्र नक्षत्रों (नक्षत्रलोक / कर्मदेवलोक) के क्षेत्र से 27 × 4 108 पृथ्वी तक पहुँचती हैं। वे आगे चार प्रकार की आवृत्तियों में विघटित हो जाते हैं - यम, सूर्य, प्रजापति और संयुक्त (संयुक्त)। इस प्रकार युगादि के दिवस काल, पवित्र ज्ञान, ऋषि-मुनियों एवं प्रकृति के रूप में पृथ्वी पर सदा प्रकट रहने वाले परमपिता की आराधना करके सनातन लोग विभिन्न पवित्र कार्यों में संलग्न होते हैं। मध्ययुगीन ग्रंथ एवं शिलालेख इस दिवस हिंदू मंदिरों, ब्राह्मण समुदायों को किए गए प्रमुख धर्मार्थ दान को रिकॉर्ड करते हैं। जीवन के सभी स्वादों का नव उत्सव जब चमेली के फूलों के रंगीन फूल, जो विकास का प्रतीक हैं, ईश्वर को अर्पित किए जाते हैं, जब फसल के खेत कटाई के लिए पक जाते हैं, तो उगादी को नवीन काल चक्र का स्वागत करते हुए मनाया जाता है। उगादी उस्तव के कई रीति-प्रथाएं सदियों से आस्था के सहित प्रचलित परंपराओं का एक अभिन्न अंग हैं। ऐसी ही एक स्थानीय प्रथा है एक पारंपरिक विशेष व्यंजन ‘उगादी पच्चडी’ को परम्परागत रूप से पक्काना, जो प्रकृति के सभी रंगों एवं स्वादों का प्रतीक है जो आश्चर्यजनक रूप से जीवन के सार एवं इसके पहलुओं का भी प्रतीक है। ‘उगादी पच्चडी’, अन्य स्थानीय मीठे व्यंजनों के साथ, ताजा स्थानीय फसल से छह-स्वादों के साथ पक्काई जाती है, जिसे आयुर्वेद विद्या पूर्ण आरोग्य के लिए शड-रस6 भोजन के रूप में सुझाता है, जो छह जीवन रस हैं - गुड़ (मीठा) - मधुर मिठास एवं आनन्द का प्रतीक; सेंधा नमक - जीवन के स्वाद का प्रतीक है; इमली - जीवन के खट्टापन या चुनौतीपूर्ण अनुभवों का प्रतीक है; कच्चा आम - चटपटा स्वाद जीवन में आश्चर्य एवं नव क्षण का प्रतीक है; नीम के फूल - कड़वे जीवन बाधाए; एवं मिर्च - क्रोध पूर्ण जीवन के मसालेदार अनुभव। सांस्कृतिक रूप से, इन सभी को एक व्यंजन में मिलाना मानव जीवन के समृद्ध-सुगंधित संतुलित अनुभव एवं सभी बहुलताओं की स्वीकृति का प्रतीक है। 6 स्वस्थ भोजन में सम्मिलित किए जाने वाले छह स्वाद। कृषि की दृष्टि से उगादी ‘प्रथम जुताई समारोह’ के दिवस को चिह्नित करता है, एक मुख्य वैदिक अनुष्ठान जब किसान समुदाय विशिष्ट वर्ष के लिए चुनी गई शुभ लकड़ी के साथ नव खेत का हल निर्मित करते हैं। हलों को जीवनदायनी हल्दी के लेप से सजाया जाता है एवं उनके बैलों को भी सिंदूर लेप के शुभ चिह्नों से सजाया जाता है, तथा धरती माता एवं स्थानीय देवताओं की वधिवत् पूजा-अर्चना की जाती है। इस दिवस पालन किए जाने वाले सभी अनुष्ठानों का अपना उदात्त महत्व है। दक्षिण भारत में उगादी उस्तव में गृहों की गहरी शुद्धि एवं सफाई सम्मिलित है। आंध्र एवं कर्नाटक के जन प्रातः काल उठते हैं, औषधिय तेल लेप लगाते हैं एवं स्नान् आदि उपरान्त शुद्ध वस्त्र धारण करते हैं, क्योंकि वे सूर्य-देवता की पूजा करने के लिए आगे बढ़ते हैं। वे अपने घरों, मंदिरों एवं कार्यस्थलों को पवित्र आम के पत्तों एवं फूलों से सजाते हैं, एवं अपने घरों के प्रवेश द्वार पर नारियल एवं केले के पत्तों के साथ कलश रखने की प्रथा का अनुसरण करते हैं। पवित्र गाय के गोबर को उनके आवासों के सामने लिप्त किया जाता है एवं फिर रंगीन फूलों के कोलम या मुग्गु (रंगोली) को प्राकृतिक विषहरण, शुद्धिकरण, सद्भाव एवं शांति के लिए जैविक पाउडर के साथ कलात्मक रूप से सजाया जाता है। मंदिर के दर्शन, सांस्कृतिक संगीत समारोह जैसे कवि सम्मेलन (कविता कार्यक्रम) कई स्थानों में आयोजित किए जाते हैं, जबकि प्रचुर मात्रा में दान, नव उपक्रम आरम्भ करना एवं इस शुभ नव वर्ष के दिवस सभी के साथ व्यंजनों को दान करना ह्रदयों में पूर्णता प्रदान करता है। महाराष्ट्र राज्य में, इसे गुडी पडवा के रूप में मनाया जाता है जो सभी नकारात्मकताओं को दूर करता है, सभी पश्चिमी घरों में समृद्धि को आमंत्रित करता है। पूजा के उपरान्त गुड़ी के ध्वजा का आरोहण एक प्रमुख अनुष्ठान है। गुड़ी ध्वज को एक रंगीन रेशमी वस्त्र का उपयोग करके नीम एवं आम वृक्ष के फूलों के साथ एक बांस की छड़ी के साथ साखर गाठी (एक गन्ने की माला) के साथ बांधा जाता है। बांस की छड़ी पर (उल्टे स्थिति) कलश सद्भाव एव सत्य की विजय का प्रतीक है। उगादी वास्तव में सामान्य पुरुषों एवं स्त्रीओं को सत्य, आशा एवं सौभाग्य के प्रकाशमान प्राणियों में परिवर्तित कर देता है, क्योंकि वे अज्ञानता के अंधेरे से छीलते हैं, एवं प्रातःकाल उठते हैं, शुद्ध तेलों एवं धूप में स्नान करते हैं, आनंद और कृतज्ञता के एक नव उत्साह में उल्लास करते हैं - एक नव वर्ष, वास्तव में एक नया जीवन! बालक एवं युवा आनंदित सभाओं, हरियाली, समृद्ध स्वाद एवं मुस्कुराते मुखों की भावना से आश्वस्त अनुभव करते हैं। उगादी उत्सव का सार प्रकृति की सबसे बड़ी शक्ति को महत्व देना एवं उसकी पूजा करना है - युग काल एवं उसका परम स्रोत;
